Getting the Sound to Show Up

Hey, I just transfered from basic imovie over to final cut express and I can't seem to get anything imported properly. I use a basic firewire cable and ever time I try to import final cut express quits. Or when I import a folder wilth clips the sound isn't imported along with the video and I'm not sure what the problem is. Does anyone know what could be the issue, I use a panasonic AG DVC30 and a basic firewire.
