First Film...

Hey,

I'm really interested in getting into the world of TV production and have done/am doing a variety of work experience with production companies and broadcasters. I'm only in my 2nd year at uni studying Media and am unsure as to exactly which 'area' I'd like to go into, however I am very interested in camerawork. So I've decided to try and make a short film to see whether I enjoy it and/or am any good - but have no idea where to start! I literally have a standard home video camcorder and myself...that's it - does anyone have any tips or anything? (Even something as basic as a script idea that would work with minimum external input would be great) At this stage I don't really want to go out and buy a 'proper' camera or anything cos like I said, it really is just a little experiment at the moment, so any tips/hints would be much appreciated.

Another bit of advice:
Hook up with your local public access station .

local public access station

local public access stations really are a good way to go, most are willing to train you on all the equipment and teach you most everything you need while sometimes, just maybe getting paid. Also dont be afraid to use your you video camera that you have now, you do not need an excellent camera to make an excellent short film. Be creative. I am in the same situation with the camera and I am working on a script with some buddies now. Use lots of angles and really try to use all that you have learned in your media class. You might look at your local bookstore for a book called "Pulling Off Your Shorts". It's designed for teens, but it's just a clear basic book without a lot of fluff that will give you the basics about writing your screenplay, setting up shots, lighting, etc. Also, you might want to look at some of the shorts posted in the Summer Shorts to get ideas for what kinds of stories work and which ones don't.
