I am just finishing up my first semester of school and in order to get into the film program I must submit a portfolio. I have written some stuff, but have not filmed anything yet. Do you guys have any suggestions on what type of camera that I should buy? I can spend anywhere from about $1,000 to $1,500.

Yes, I am in the dilemma. Does anyone know of a good camera to buy within that price range. I want something HD, and that gives a real professional look to my movies, but affordable as well...

HD is the biggest wast of money ever for an amateur. You can get so much of a better camera that's not hd for the price of an hd camera, and unless you happen to have a spare blueray burner and a huge external harddrive to sore the footage on it's no good any way. I would recommend either a used vx1000 or vx2000 which you can get for around $1500 at most or if you have about $2000 get a used dvx100a if you really can't brake $1000 by that much you can get a Panasonic dvc-20 for about $1100 new witt 3ccds.
hope this helps.
