Film vs. Digital

Is film better than digital?

While at the workshop in burbank I had the chance to see something Roy has been shooting of other great cinematographer’s thoughts. One of them was of Conrad talking about the use of a lens in a film he was shooting. I am not sure of the exact quote but I feel pretty sure that I understand what he was saying when he said,”…I didn’t want a better lens, I wanted that lens…” He wanted a lens to produce a look he could achieve only with that particular lens and he did not want a better lens than that exact lens for that exact look. I think that the question “which is better” is subject to content and the context of the scene and the message.

My father told me stories and my mother read stories to me when I was young. I loved to hear these stories from both of my parents. They had different kinds of voices and both told great stories and they both used their voices to add emotional depth to the stories. One was not really better than the other. They were both good and I enjoyed them very much. I think you can use the cameras voice to tell your story and I don’t think one is better than the other. I believe technology has brought digital aquisition to a level that the artist is the most important variable not the camera.

That's what's great about filmmaking. It's all so subjective, there is very little that is absolutely 'right' or 'wrong.' It just is.
