Film: Romeo + Juliet, recommendations.

Has anyone else seen Baz Luhrmann's "Romeo + Juliet"?

I really loved this movie, & I find I could watch this again & again. I think it was the whole style of the film, the composition of everything, the magic in the love scenes and the way that the acting delivered the message & thus freeing the Shakespearean language from its cage of obscurity. I found it a refreshing, entertaining and artistic film experience.

I was just wondering if anyone else had seen this movie, and what other movies like this could be recommended?

I saw it about a year ago. Didn't go crazy over it, but it was pretty good, and the emotions came off very strongly.

I really like the styling of Baz Luhrmann's films too. He's often critisized as being too garish / sentimental / tacky, but what he does he does well and unapologetically.

Have you seen his other films? Moulin Rouge is his most recent and is in the same style as R&J. His first feature was Strictly Ballroom, it's a great Australian comedy, really sweet.

As an actor you do a lot of Shakeaspeare, it's great to see a film maker make his stories agreeable to a wider audience.

I've only seen bits and pieces of R&J, unfortunately... it's one of those movies I keep meaning to see, but always forget about when I go to Blockbuster. But I can point you toward some films that are great stylistically:

"Hamlet," directed by Michael Almereyda; like R&J, it uses the original Shakespearean language but moves the action to a modern day. This has some amazing sequences that do a great job of pulling you into the heads of the characters.

"Fight Club," "Se7en," directed by David Fincher; "Fight Club" is probably the best adaptation of a novel I've ever seen... it has a very subjective style, does a great job of conveying the first-person "I." "Se7en" has amazing art direction in particular... it's about a serial killer who kills his victims in ways that represent the sins he thinks they're guilty of... a very disturbing but amazing film.

"Vanilla Sky," directed by Cameron Crowe; like "Fight Club," it conveys the "I" perspective in a very impressive way to create an immersive environment.

i really like this film. it's one of my favorite films and one of the best i've ever seen. i can't stop crying while watching it...
