You cannot really make the statement "Universal uses ______ software for editing their films" because it is a bit like saying what lenses or cameras does Dreamworks or Disney use to shoot their films.
There are a variety of different packages that are being used depending upon tradition and history. I'm sure some facilities use Avid for offline projects and doing various projects like trailers, etc.
One quote I found particualrly telling by a post-production supervisor for big Hollywood films, in an interview Peter Mavromates said to the effect that every new person who comes to work in the industry today, regardless if they want to be a producer, director, cinematrographer, editor, actor or PA... they all know Final Cut Pro.
And that fact shocked Mavromates but it is telling that a new generation of filmmakers and film trained enthusiasts and young professionals know editing and that this software package is totally revolutionizing the industry in ways no other before has done.
So when young people come into our workshop, I say, better learn FCP. But I don't need to tell them this because if they are serious about having a career they all know it before the words come out of my mouth.
