Hello all, thought I'd finally post on this beautiful forum, after looking around for a while.
My friends and I are still in highschool, looking to get into the film industry after taking a year off to save for schooling and get a portfolio down. We mostly do short films, 2-15 minutes in length is typical for now.
Anyway, we're starting to get a bit more experience, and I'm growing out of my Apex175 recording directly to my laptop on set, it really isn't effective. With the purchase of a second camera, I'm going to have to up the game on my audio.
My budget isn't really an existant number, it's more whatever I want to buy, I save for. Working part time really sucks, huh?
I was just wondering, if I'm going to be recording to an external recorder, not into the camera, how should I be distributing the money I have?
For example, one set up I was considering was buying the Rode NTG-2 microphone, and a Fostex FR-2LE field recorder. $500 for the fostex, $250 for the microphone. Is this an effective use of my money? An alternate setup I was considering included getting a Rode NTG-3, or similar microphone for around $500, and spending $350 on a Zoom H4n to record into. Should I be spending more on the microphone, or the recorder?
Also, if I go with the Zoom H4n, I was considering using the built in microphones to pick up ambient sound, and have a couple audio channels going. I could then export it all into Logic Studio and tone down the volume of the ambience, etc. Is it worth saving the money from buying another external microphone to pick up ambience, and instead use that to buy a rode blimp windshield? that would kill 2 birds with 1 stone, shock mount and windshield, and I already have a boom pole.
I'm sorry for all the questions, but I'm very eager to get into this industry and I have so much I want to know. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks much!
