Creating rain for close ups without renting rain machine?

In three weeks I will be filming a 16mm short film for school and need some advice on creating rain without having to rent an enormous rain machine. All of the shots will be eithor medium or close ups. I will also be trying to create shadows of rain drops on many elements in the frame. If anyone can help that would be great. Thankyou!!!!

What I have done in the past is:

Take a sprinkler system (or some method of making rain drops) and put them relatively close to the lens. Then wet down the area. You will need to backlight the rain for it to really show up.
