What type of camera would be best mini dv or hard drive?

to be honest i would go with mini DV just due to the fact that you can record an hour a tape and most hard drive cameras dont do longer than 15 mins

it all comes down t how much you are willing to spend.

if you get a mini DV make sure it is 3CCD.

Doesn't matter. They both record in 1's and 0's (digitally). What matters is how many CCDs, how big the CCDs are, and how well they reproduce color and do in low light.
