Having just watched this movie (Peter Jackson's first low-budget feature, shot over four years for very little money) for the first time in quite a while, I thought it was worth pointing out for anyone who wants to do effects with very little money and hasn't seen this one. It was interesting going through the movie figuring out how they'd done the effects, which are often quite convincing for a movie of its budget.
The 'time travel by turning lights on and off' sequence at the end of 'The Frighteners' is another great Peter Jackson trick if you've missed that one too... that really impressed me with how good it looked and how easily it was done.
