umm. its always better to convert the image to black and white in post... (with digital technology anyways)

I need a great camera but I only have a couple hundred.

look at some of the older posts on this topic. There have been many discussions about which camera is the "best" one.

    Canon HV10

All consumer/prosumer (and even pro) cameras will have poor in camera sound quality. For good sound you need a mic. And well... A lot more... In terms of image, I've heard of this camera. My only recommendation, is to try it out BEFORE buying it. You want to know for sure that its what your...

    sync sound

I was investigating recording sound onto a DAT recorder, and then syncing in post, but I have heard that people who have tried this find that since the DAT and camera run at different speeds it won't sync up. I'm not necessarily talking about recording onto a film camera, just digital or film...

    camera effect

yeah, that makes sense. What sense did you get in terms of format? I'm hopelessly incapable of telling the difference between HD, and film. Could you maybe explain what you look for, or what helps you determine these subtle differences in look just in general? Thanks.

    camera effect

I was watching this music video, and was wondering how they might have achieved that really fast semi-circle around the man at the desk? Also, for the opening (and various other similar parts), do you think the cinematographer used multiple cameras? I'd also be interested in any other thoughts...

I could use your 2 cents...

The look of films to some extent (up until about the 40's or first golden age of hollywood) was affected by the almost purely commercial interests of the studios. They needed to churn out so many films, and were in every sense of the word "factories". However, there were really good directors...

    ramping

David, thank you very much for the comprehensive explanation. That's very interesting.

    ramping

I was wondering how exposure works if you want to ramp, for example from 24fps to like, 50-60fps, or more. Since you'll be losing light as you give less exposure to each frame, how does one smoothly compensate for this?

Best camera for an aspiring filmmaker

I agree with most of what you said. Although, the gs500 (and 400) does NOT shoot true widescreen. I can assure you. True widescreen would mean that it would have to have native 16:9 CCD's, which it doesn't. It has 3, 4:3 CCD's. The next step down, is like with the XL-2, where it isn't true...

    Where to find actors/actresses?

I think you'll find that there will be a LOT of actors who will want to work on your project if you show them you take it seriously. Theatre groups are good, but don't underestimate people you may know who aren't necessarily trained as "actors". These people sometimes work better because their...

Starting off a film with a voice over- is it a crutch?

I don't think its by default a "crutch". Let's say that it can be one, but it definetely isn't one automatically. Have you guys seen: American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Zentropa, The Element of Crime, A Clockwork Orange? Not to mention V for Vendetta, and Lord of the Rings, and many, many...

    Lighting For MiniDV

I'm not sure I have much more to add. Just addressing how a student filmmaker can economically light? Or the tools? Or a philosophy? I think it would need to be more focused.

    A good camera?

$500 probobly won't get you any camera at the level you're thinking of to be completely honest. Used or otherwise. I would recommend saving your money, or renting. You might look into Canon's consumer HV camera, the Canon HV-20 or 10 or something. It's relateively cheap, maybe a few hundred...

    Lighting For MiniDV

I recommend purchasing a 500w work light with a stand. Best investment I ever made. $20, and you can really do so much with it. Also, I'd recommend a reflector kit of some kind, because its so much cheaper to reflect/control light that's already there than buy a light specifically for the task...

    fake sunset

Mr. Mullen, Is there anyway to realistically fake a sunset for an interior at night. That is, I am lighting an office scene that takes place at sunset, with the light coming from a window as side light, and then a candle (since two people are having dinner). The lighting package is very...

    letters from iwo jima

I loved the desaturated gritty texture given to the majority of the picture. It was so refreshing after I had (for the first time) seen The Pianist, which paints this beautiful and glossy image that I don't think was suitable at all to the subject matter other than to make the cinematographer...

Please critique my screenplay that I wrote for college apps

I agree that the beginning is full of clichés. It feels very plot driven as opposed to character driven. I do think the dialogue is natural which is good, but to what end? Every scene should advance the story or our understanding of the characters in some way. In the dialogue scene for instance...
