what about after the HC1 E???

Didn't the HC3 replace the HC1 already? As for CMOS, yes, it does appear to be worse in low light, but that's the main limitation: all cameras are probably going to be CMOS in a few years. Feature-wise, it does seem that Sony removed quite a few from the camera for no obvious reason, maybe they...

    Purchasing an editing computer

Saving money isn't the goal; the goal is to build a PC with high-quality components that you know will work together and give you the performance you want. A PC from a big manufacturer will always be cheaper because they can load it up with any old junk for hardware; it's always amusing to open...

    Spam

We seem to have had a major outbreak of spam today: I've deleted about a dozen messages from the forums I'm a moderator for, but there are plenty still left in other forums from the same people ('Gramham' and 'Sterence0').

What kind of editing software does say universal use

Uh, normally you'd edit on Avid (or, in the last year or two, FCP) and then if you needed a higher-quality final edit you'd conform that elsewhere from the EDL. Editing a movie on an extremely expensive effects system makes little sense; why tie it up for months when you're not using those effects?

    stop motion paper airplane

One option would be to hang it on wires and then remove the wires digitally afterwards.

    Deployment Strategy Movie: Headshot fx!!

If you can, but 'Bad Taste' got away without any and I didn't even realise they weren't using real guns until I'd seen it half a dozen times :). If people notice the missing cases you've probably already lost them anyway. The only thing I would say about your bullet-hit effects is that I don't...

    From Avid to DVD

You should be able to use Sorenson to produce a .mpg file, which has both audio and video in the same file. Is that the format that Nero expects? I'm not sure which version of Squeeze you have, but in my version you do that by selecting 'Program' file rather than 'Elementary'.

How do I roll a car?

    1. Hire a stunt-person. 2. Do it as CG. 3. Figure out a way you can cut to the upside-down car without having to show the roll. However, even if you do that remember to remove anything potentially harmful before turning the car over (e.g. battery, gas, oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid...

    Sony Z1 or V1

1080p will stutter more than 1080i; for some reason some people consider that a benefit because it 'looks like film'. However, given that so many people now watch movies on progressive-scan TVs, that may not matter, and shooting progressive should eliminate the resolution loss from...

    Sony Z1 or V1

Both cameras are 1080-line HDV, so the bit-rate is identical. I know the Z1 has some features the V1 doesn't, most obviously that V1 can't shoot both NTSC and PAL, though that's less of an issue when you can shoot progressive at 24fps or 25fps and convert to both formats. The other issue is...

    Another Student-Camera Question...

If you're serious about concerts you probably do want an HD camera; the XLH1 would probably be ideal for that at the lower end of the price scale, but that's still a lot of dollars! As for concert sound, you'd probably want to record direct from the mixing desk into a DAT or similar and then...

    Rescuing Video from DVDs

Yeah, there are plenty of programs for Windows to rip video from DVDs, but I'm not aware of any for Macs. I'm sure they must exist somewhere.

Trouble tracking down the right camera

Now try selling a silent movie and see how many people agree. Personally I've worked on dozens of low-budget movies and the single biggest problem between them was poor sound. Far more people will watch a movie that looks OK and has good sound than a movie that looks great and has awful...

I've got two 16mm cameras. What should I do?

You certainly can shoot 16mm, but the cost is high compared to DV or HDV, and the grain can be a problem with the kind of compression used on DVDs or for digital broadcasts. I've been told that the BBC are taking a dim view of 16mm film for shows they broadcast digitally, for example.

SD look better on HDTV than regular TV?

I haven't looked at SD on an HDTV, but certainly SD video played back on my PC monitor at HD resolutions looks awful; generally video always looks better at native resolution than scaled up (and sometimes better than scaled down, e.g. converting interlaced 1080i footage to progressive 720p).

    Purchasing an editing computer

Yeah, I haven't been impressed with DVCPRO HD either. I tried converting some HDV footage to DVCPRO HD and then back again and it looked pretty bad, whereas HDV to DNxHD to HDV was basically indistinguishable from the original footage. Of course with nearly twice the bit-rate that's not too...

questions about cameras for action sports

About $50,000 :). HDV is an HD format, but it's highly compressed to fit on DV tape. Formats like HDCAM use much lower compression and give a better picture, but are extremely expensive to buy and fairly expensive to shoot. I'm not sure about action sports as I've never taped them, but...

    Purchasing an editing computer

From what I can find online, Premiere was released in 1991, whereas the first Avid system was released in 1989. And Avid was capable of editing serious movies well before Premiere reached that stage; even Premiere 4.2 couldn't handle movies more than an hour long and certainly was nowhere near...

    Budget video shooting

An old Beta SP camera that used to cost $20,000 will almost certainly be better than a new DV camera that costs $200. But for the same price, DV is almost always going to beat any analogue equivalent; there's a reason why most companies, at least here in the UK, abandoned Beta SP long ago for...
