HARRY POTTER and the half blood prince.

Just saw this on the big 3D Imax screen. It was a bit of a rip off having no actual ending... but apart from that, I did enjoy the acting and story. The lighting was very interesting, it made the set seem so solid and huge. The story was full of teen love, teen spats, so the target market will...

    FAINTHEART comedy. british.

Very funny. Saw it last night. Life in a little English town. What happens when fantasy is used as a substitute for taking responsibilty with ones own life. Still laughing about some of the jokes. four out of five. Reminded me very much of "son of rambow"

    Used camera advice

What dont you like about the sound? Too many flat hard surfaces in the room? You can kill the reflected sound by getting out your blankets covering all the hard surfaces. That should sound pretty good.

    My first movie-- handheld camera

I like your idea. I think the big idea is to shoot in masters first, then go for the mid close ups ...and the closeups last. Maybe a run through before you shoot each scene. Do you have much action? If you do then you might need to do a storyboard for those parts, it will save you lots of...

    Film as Art or Entertainment?

Hmmm..not bad. how about "man does not live on bread alone". But back to the topic. Perhaps if I compare a film to a car (for the boys) and clothes (for the girls). Sure the car has to get you around and the clothes have to keep you warm..but if they look good too...well thats just great! Same...

    Choice of School

Ok, I will give you mine. But remember, in the end only you can choose what's right for you. After all, you suffer or gain the most depending upon the luck of your choice. I am in New Zealand, so it's not the same as Florida. First; can I say that I have a friend who left school at 15 to work...

    Film as Art or Entertainment?

Oh, that's ok, we can cut back and forth between several lines of thought, just as a film cuts back between several lines of action...the trick is going to be to make them contact and resolve later on in the thread. (or not, lets go all "no country for old men" on it) Well you might be right...

Fade to black ? show me an example!

Yes, yes...I see. So many ways to do it. But here is a question for you. What is the most interesting time passing device that you have ever seen? Now I was going to say the water surface in Highlander..but that is not that unusual...just clever. Unusual ways to show time passing...over to you..

Fade to black ? show me an example!

Interesting! I will have to have a look at that. Thanks for the pointer. Soooooo, how do you show time passing? As far as I can tell, "black" is the convention for "night falls, or sleep" "Cut" is the convention for " the very next second" and "Fade" is the convention for" some time passing...

    Film as Art or Entertainment?

Dreams lead reality, I think, after all you have to think up an idea before you put it into action. You often hear motiviational speakers talk of using visualisation as a tool to shape your future. What is a Film but a fancy bit of visualisation I even think that testing has shown that...

    Film as Art or Entertainment?

I will have to think about that. (I have a meeting in half an hour), will give it some thought and let you know what I come up with.

My mountain won't fit in my TV set.

Things that work on a large Cinema screen will not work on a small TV screen. A landscape with a small figure tracking across will work well on the large screen, while on tv it will have you rushing to the tube to clean off what looks like a wandering insect. A close up of Angelina Jolie looks...

    Film as Art or Entertainment?

Yes, you are right. I know you are right. In my defense, even the great Speilberg himself just had to put in lots of great natural wonder shots at the start of "Indiana Jones and the last crusade" Kind of like Adventure tourisim. In fact, he had the spice city of Petra in the fist one too...

    Film as Art or Entertainment?

Hi again, still working on the storyboard for my next shoot. Neraly done (fifth revision!) Got the cameras...tested them...great! So I'm wondering, do my establishing shots have to be pretty? I want them to be pretty, I can't help it, composition pleases me. I have it seems the same...

    Ideas

I agree. Creative people usually get that spark inside the brain that sort of drives the whole creative exercise on. Who knows what will trigger it off. I have often thought about just what it is. For example with film making there are two sparks. The first spark is "Hey, it would be great to...

    Looking for a story

Ok , I have an idea for you. If you use it you should put me down in the credits as co thinker. It's a flat bit of sea. Two robot pirates have been cast adrift in a lifeboat. They are troublemakers and look odd, but have pirate clothes on..not in great condition. They no longer get on, as...

Fade to black ? show me an example!

Hi, back again. Man, it sure is quiet on this forum, not at all what I'm used to. I just did some reserach on fade to black. I watched every transition in Star Wars (1976). Lucas is crazy. Mostly he uses a soft edge cross wipe ..but sometimes he uses a circle wipe ..and once he even used a...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off! Now that was good, I nearly cried when that sportscar went over the bank. And the way he spoke directly to the camera, that was unusual. The main actor did another great film called Biloxi blues (spelling?).. very interesting actor.

I'm thinking that Groundhog day is an unusual film from an editing point of view. If you consider that editing is all about continuity, then the continuity of time in GHD should present some unusual problems. The same with back to the future. What about the sixth sense? The twist in that was...

20 is a pretty big number. Maybe five times would be the average for the ones that I like. (Kids on the other hand can watch NEMO over and over again). Blade Runner is a film that I tend to watch every year or so. Each time I watch it I see something new in the plot. Yes it's true, Deckard...
