Choice of School

Getting an apprenticeship may seem like a daunting task. But remember, if you go into any kind of apprenticeship it's not necessary for you to have experience. If you had experience, you would be the master, not the apprentice.

If you are living in a place that does not have a lot of film and television production then you need to get to somewhere that does if you want to do an apprenticeship. You need to go to where the masters are -- Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, London, Paris, Sydney, Hong Kong, Toronto.

It sounds like you are willing to move to any of these places to get your education anyway. You have to be willing to make that move to go into an apprenticeship program. Or you can call the Guilds and find out what programs they have that you can apply for. The Directors Guild has a DGA Apprenticeship Program that you can apply for to get certified as an Assistant Director/UPM.

You have to go where the work is.

I want an apprenticeship or an internship. Either one is hard to get in FL even though i do live about 30 minutes from Miami which is not a bad spot where they film a lot. I dont know any websites to find out which movies are being filmed in what locations so if someone could help me out with that I could probably find something.

I am going to look into the Directos Guild programs like you said and see if they have internships or apprenticeships available.

My moms friend whos in the industry told me that moving to cali or ny would be a bad idea and that it doesnt matter where you live to get into the industry. I feel like shes wrong though because if im living where the majority of filming is, im more likely to get a job and meet people everyday who are in entertainment so I might as well move there soon and claim residency right? haha

Major requirement: Commitment

Major requirement: Commitment

What is her line of work and location?

In regards to all of the things we talked about so far in this string - choosing schools, locations, internships, apprenticeships, being self-taught, finding and getting jobs, life after film school, and networking - whatever one's chosen career path and industry is, in this case, it's being a filmmaker in the motion picture industry - it takes this major requirement from the very beginning and throughout the journey of your career (and journey of life): commitment. This can mean things beyond what your mind can imagine what commitment really means.

i agree 100% with all that you just said. I figured everything out :)
I am applying to Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa. It has a really good film program for a community college and has unbelievable faculty members that did a lot in film in their years in the industry. I'm going to go there and hopefully get a job/internship while working on my associates. Then ill see where i go from there
