Winter Tales Ideas – Short Films For The Holidays

For many people, December is a magical month. It is a month full of stories, happy events, and holidays. In some places of the world, it snows. In other places, it is a beautiful warm sunny day. There are many Holidays that happen during Winter: Christmas, Hanukkah, St Nicholas Day, Kwanzaa, New Year, and many others. During this time, families and friends get together and people try to be better than they usually are during the year. There are also many traditions that revolve around these Winter Holidays.

For many generations, Winter Holidays have been the main inspiration behind many Winter Stories. It is not too late to come up with new Winter Tales and turn them into original Short Films. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Snowman – if you are lucky enough to live in a place where it snows during the Winter Holidays, you can make a real Snowman. Your short film could tell the story of how that Snowman was made and you can connect this small event to the story of those who make the Snowman. If you live in a place where it doesn’t snow, you can make a Snowman out of cotton balls, paper, marshmallows, and other materials that you have available. You could tell the story of someone trying to do a Snowman without snow.

2. Tradition – you can make a short film about the tradition that you and your family have during the Winter Holidays. What holiday do you celebrate? How do you celebrate it? What food do you eat?

3. How do Winter Holidays make you feel? – you can create a short film about how this time of the year makes you feel. Do you feel extremely happy? Sad? Anxious? Excited? Why?

4. The Food – you can talk about how you are preparing for the Holiday and what food you or a family member will be making. Everybody has a different way of making food and some families choose to eat something different for each holiday.

Inspiration is all around us. All you need to do is find a topic and shoot a film about that topic. What makes it different is your unique way of telling this story, the people that are in your life, and your own personal experiences.

What Winter Tales do you wish to turn into a movie during the Holidays?

It would be an interesting short film to showcase the family traditions. My family has many traditions during the year and even though they seem like the norm here, in Estonia, they might be something new for people from other countries.

"Do you want to build a snowman" - you could film a little girl struggling to build her first snowman. That would be a cute winter short film.
