Where did the term Gaffer come from

From the word "gaff" which in British English means metal pole used in theatre to adjust the stage lights.
 
The Gaffer is very important for the production of a movie because lights are what make the clarity of the image good or not. If the subjects are under exposed or over exposed the quality of the film will be affected
