What are the possibilites for student film?

I am very interested in distribution, and was wondering what are the possibilities for distribution for student filmmakers?

putting it in festivals - as many as you can afford is a worthy endeavor.

I certainly have seen many film makers get their shorts on compliation dvds as a result of good reactions and not nessicarily prizes from film festivals, and ive seen those take off in stores and indie cinemas - getting you distributution.

the internet is invaluable however with spreading the word for your film.
