This cinematographer really did a great job with "The Deer Hunter". If you have not seen this movie you must see it.
He studied cinema at the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest and Film Art in Budapest. Together with his friend and fellow student László Kovács, he filmed the events of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution in Budapest and then smuggled the film out of the country shortly afterwards.
I got to meet László Kovács, and listen to him speak about shooting "Easy Rider" and the revolution in Budapest at a UFVA conference. I have not had the opportunity to meet mr. Zsigmond yet although i saw him at the ASC awards ceramonies in 2006.
Vilmos has a facebook page at the link below with more information and a means to contact him if you are interested. I know he has a very interesting history.
