The Business End

So what does everybody think of the scripts that are being sold today? Honestly, I wish we had more people that were interested in the business-end of the industry. It's just as important as the craft and artistry. Is everybody getting onto the Hollywood Reporter's website and Variety's? How about scriptsales.com? Guys, if you are serious about this industry do your homework. Not to mention, I haven't seen anybody writing in the screenwriting forum lately, so I figured I would put something out there.

interesting post, temerson. what kinds of scripts are being sold today?

what can we do to make our scripts more salable these days? what do people look for or what can we project people will want to see more of?

it would be crazy not to consider what would make our scripts more marketable before and as we write them.

will admit, haven't been keeping up with any of that right now since writing (scripts) has been more of a hobby for me at the moment.

writing what we enjoy writing along with making certain choices considering salability isn't a bad thing. i would be interested in chatting more about the business of writing in this forum.

funny -- not sure how many writers who write for the art and not for income would be into talking about or even thinking about the business end. maybe that is why writers get agents, editors, managers? but the writer will only be steps ahead or closer to either getting their scripts sold, getting funding, or getting their script made into a movie if they do keep up with the trends.

the thing is students, half the time, who are trying to write scripts usualy look at it at an Avant-guard stand point...

While some people do look at it at the Marketing standpoint...

So I guess a few tips for this:

1. Make your idea easily presentable to even the DUMBEST of people... I'm serious, there are some dumb people out there, and its nice that people write nice scripts, but with the overload of accesibility, they wont work hard to look at your scritp.... SO Write a Synopsis! first page or somewhere on the top of your script...

2. Its stupid, but Bright color bindings stand out.... if you have a theme to your script, be bold, go for it....

3. An agent, if you really want to sell...

and finaly

4. Take a marketing class... My major is Film Production, but I've got a Marketing classes which I chose by my self... very handy!

and dont take this advice like words written in a sacred book, I'm just a student, this is my opinion based on my experiance

PRESENTATION IS KEY! ^_^
