stop-motion using people

i am going to be doing stop-motion for the first time (first time for any kind of animation besides Flash).
Using real people, and a regular SLR camera.
I would appreciate any kind of tips or technical info anyone could give me or refer me to.
I was thinking about shoot at a 12fps rate, and then duplicating the frames on Avid, as I import them.
Also if anyone could tell me what the best format for importing pictures into the Avid (resolution wise, etc.)
