I already have a shure sm57 that I use for recording my guitar. It is one of the best mics for this so I was wondering what people thought of using it for boom micing.

SM 57 as a boom mic

Well I can't recomend a dynamic sm57 as an effective boom mic. Usually when you are running a boom you need to be a number of feet away from your subject so the mic doesn't show up in the shot. As you've probably experienced, moving just a short distance from the 57 causes a huge drop in level.

Boom mics have what is called Hypercardoid or Supercardoid pickup patterns. In laymans terms. The mic's focus as much of their pickup power directly in front while rejecting most audio from the sides. Also most boom mic's require phantom power upping their sensitivity there by allowing a greater distance from source to mic while still capturing the audio effectively.

I recomend stopping into an audio store and testing for yourself. You will be quite surprised at how effective a boom mic can be at picking up audio from a distance.

Do you think that audio technica atr55 is a good mic for start?
We buy Fostex Fr-2 but i don't undestand how works without the timecode card.
