Ryerson University & Film Experience Qs

Hi guys,

Does anyone attend or know a friend who attends Ryerson University here? I'm serious about being a director and is looking for a college/ university with lots of resources and good teachings. I heard from my teacher that Ryerson is inexpensive and has a really good reputation in film but I have not yet visited the school myself (I will go probably during the summer).

Also, I'm interested on how people make their films if they'd like to share. What i mean is I have been making a lot of shorts, most of them are o.k. technical-wise and have won some awards. However personally, I'm not satisfied with them because they lack good storylines. I have a very big concern in having a more-than-good (great) storyline but it just takes so long to develop one and somehow in high school it seems that you have to just make a lot of shorts and win awards to get recognized first.

Any comments?

Thank you.

Hey,
um i noe a guy who goes to Ryerson...but hes not really a friend. I visited Ryerson on one of their event days where you can chose a program you're intrested in and ask questions and take tours.

I myself plan to go to Ryerson because of this:
-you can rent video equipment
-its not competitive after you get into the program
-actors from their theater program who will work for free post their head shots on this board and u can call 'em up.
-everyone is given and equal chance to get in.
what i mean by that is, they realize some people dont get the oppurtunity to film before university.
-its accesible by TTC
-its in downtown toronto
-and it will be very cheap for me as opposed to going to some other province or country to learn.

So Ryerson has the second best film program in the country. Somewhere in Vancouver has the first, but i've looked up UBC and it looks pricey, you have to buy your own equipment. And then i looked up VFS (because i'm not sure if its UBC or VFS) and most ppl either hated it or loved it, anyways what i learned from those ppl is that the VFS program is more indepentant, you have to fight to make a place for yourself. I'm not a naturally competitive person...i have determination but its in a more quiet manner. i'm not a persausive talker and dont think i will be able to get a directing part in VFS.

About applying to Ryerson, they dont accept moving media. And pictures of kitty cats. i think you fill out and application and they mail you back a form that tells you exactly what to put in your portfolio.

I think its awsome that you've won awards and made your own films...I want to do that but its been so hard to get my hands on a camera and a crew. But i finally did it. So this summer will be my first movie, which i plan to be about seven minutes long. Im serious about getting into the film industry but i'm not sure if i want to be a director yet...I guess i'll find out in 2 days when i start directing.

Since i havent made any films with atchual plot lines i guess i cant tell you how i make my films...but i can keep you updated on my current production if you want. I've learned claymation, and rotoscope animation and then thiers just regular film. The best editing software right now is Final Cut Pro for macs i think and thats what Rye U uses. I have a PC so i use Adobe Premiere but i prefer iMovie or Final Cut pro.

Thanks a lot for the Reply!

I've seen some commercials done on a camera phone (for realism) and won awards in Cannes, so if you don't have a good camera it's good that you can focus on stories and ideas (esp. for commercials)

Btw do you know about universities in the states such as NYU and Chicago University? and do you know if Ryerson has good library resources (ie for DVDs, archival footages, etc)?
