Realism vs Fake

When it comes to making a new technology look believable in a movie, what qualities should it have? What does a movie do to make the audience get turned off or lose interest in the movie because it is so fake looking?

It depends. Sometimes artistic expression overwhelms realism and the willingness to temporary suspend disbelief is sustained with that most outlandish imagery.
