Rare film screening at the Glendale International Film Festival

If you really would like to get inspired, I encourage all film students to see these films. Richard Lyford was in his teens when he made 9 silent 16mm films, in Seattle, before going to LA and work for Disney. I have been working on related projects since 2017. This year I scored and produced “The Scalpel,” his 6th film from 1936 when he was 19. I only had a fragment for it previously. This year I found the other 1/2 - pretty amazing considering the film is nearly 90 years old, and each of the parts was on opposite coasts! It’s a Jeckl and Hyde-style story and has pretty amazing VFX transitions, make-up, etc. Lyford's family and friends were cast and crew, and he developed his own film. He even created a 50-seat theater in the basement of his family's house!

Glendale International FF is showing the film, and also adding “As the Earth Turns” (45 min silent sci-fi epic) and my short mini-doc, "It Gets in Your Blood" about Lyford to the screening. This all got started in 2013 when folks on the Classic Horror Film Board discovered Lyford on a Something Weird video. The film is doing extremely well in festivals (81 so far with 91 awards/noms) “As the Earth Turns” has been on TCM. I’ll be there to host it.
