I agree. I think it is very telling when you hear from producers in the industry and post-production supervisors who say that every new young kid that comes to interview for a job, regardless if it a focus puller, a PA, assistant director, screenwriter -- they all know Final Cut Pro. That will cause a revolution in the industry. Filmmaking or storytelling is no longer the exclusive domain of industry executives who hold the purse strings and can greenlight a half billion dollar project with legions and divisions of stratified workers who cannot see the bigger picture (literally).

And the kids these days know film from top to bottom, beginning to end, pre-pro to post and it is because the tools have become cheaper, more accessible and easier to use on our laptops. Avid missed that boat but they can still be a player in the game. I hope they are but still I think a student of film today would be foolish not to learn FCP.

Just to set the reocrd straight with MarkG in the U.K. - if saving money is NOT the goal and a person (like yourself) really has the computer engineering background to hunt down the high performance parts and assemble them - I say great!

This is the equivalent of custom building you own high performance motor car. There is absolutely no question that you can buy high performance parts that have not been compromised in materials, assembly, or machining that will easily best Detriot, Japan, Korean built autos, or at Honda in Swindon. But you better be your own mechanic and be prepared with redundancy.

I am one of those lame computer users who simply want to take the thing out of the box plug it in, launch the software and get immediately into working with sound, picture and juxtaposition. And if anything goes wrong, I want to call the company I bought it from and say fix it by Wednesday because my deadline is Friday when I have to burn 10 DVD copies. I don't want to be a computer grease monkey.

But I applaud you MarkG for being such a stud!
