Can I direct contact an actor to get an LOI from him, along with contacting his agent?

If the actor only works through an agency, he is most likely to have a contract with that agency. However, if you contact him directly, he will inform you on the way he works with others - if he works only through an agency or not.

I don't think it is ethical to do this, however, as Maura said, if they are not bound by a contract, they can work with you directly.
Until now, I did not see a single person working with an agent not being bound by a contract

I don't think it's ok to first talk to his agent and then try to contact him. You might upset some people
