How does VR help society?

I understand that Virtual Reality is a new technology and I understand that it can be used for filmmaking, education, gaming and others. I have a simple question that I haven't found the answer to and that might help me in creating my first movie in VR: how does VR help society?
This might even be one of the first topics that I might address in my first short film.

It connects us at a deeper level. It further tears down the barriers of distance. I wouldn't be amazed if you would be able to talk with someone in VR without using an Avatar, by seeing the other person in 3D as if you were in the same room, even if you would be thousands of km away.
