One Common Unity (OCU) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. For 17 years OCU has successfully created spaces to transform the lives of youth and families. Through arts-based peace education in schools, summer youth initiatives, and through festivals and concerts, we have created spaces for people to tell their stories and share them with others. We believe much of violence is a learned behavior, and therefore, if someone can be taught violence, they can also be taught compassion, cooperation, and the skills necessary to create healthy and thriving communities. Several years ago, OCU created an award-winning documentary called FLY BY LIGHT. The film is centered upon District teenagers within the District of Columbia striving to break cycles of violence. FLY BY LIGHT follows four unforgettable young people on an eight-day journey into the mountains of West Virginia, leaving the streets to participate in an ambitious peace education program. Through breathtaking visuals from street corners to mountaintops, FLY BY LIGHT is an intimate exploration of the chaotic, confusing and emotional journey to rewrite a young person’s future.
FLY BY LIGHT was filmed over the course of 3 years and took 5 years to complete. There was over a hundred hours of footage that we crunched down into less than 90 minutes. So of course, there are a lot of important moments, scenes, and pieces that we couldn’t fit into the narrative. We recently began touring the film and as you will see, the path to change is never smooth and easy. We worked to capture the truth that, with the right support, the right programming, and unconditional love, coupled with patience- healing, growth, and happiness are all within reach.
FLY BY LIGHT has received acclaim at 13 international film festivals, including Bahamas International, Capital City Film Festival, Urban Media Maker’s Film Festival, the Environmental Film Festival in Washington D.C., and winning the Audience Choice Award at BolderLife!
