Cinematography has changed a lot over the last 10 or 12 years. The film process has all but been removed. There are a few motion pictures being shot with film but over 90% are shot digitally. The knowledge of film and it's properties are no longer required for the job. Before when film dominated having the light within the films narrow optimal exposure requirements as well as lens and shutter settings was a daunting task that only the experienced cameraman would be proficient at. Lighting, lens and shutter are still important but it's not a point of failure if you under light or over light like it was in the past.
Not only has the complexity of film gone from the equation but there was also the cost of renting or buying a cinematic quality camera. The cameras 20 years ago were 200 to 500 thousand dollars. Now you can make great quality images with your cell phone that would have cost 20,000 for a lesser quality 20 years ago. The last 20 years have been an era of revolution an change in cinematography in a large part because of complexity and cost! I will edit and add to this later. Right now I have to go to work!
