Camera Intern?

Being one of "those people" who sits through the credits I've noticed a the title Camera Intern pop up from time to time...

How does one become a camera intern? Are they hired by the production company or chosen by the camera crew and DP?

I feel like this would be step one in the path to becoming a DP, I'm just really lost in how to get into such a position.

Unpaid internship positions usually require that the intern be under the liability of school insurance, so they are working for school credit.

There is also a position called Camera PA, which I'm not sure whether that falls under the camera department or the production department (i.e. it's a PA assigned to the camera department.)
