Set Designers are responsible for creating an atmosphere and mood to match the production they are working on. Set designers are not directly seen by the public but their work is. For this reason, some people might be asking themselves if set designers are in demand and whether they should follow this career path or not.

As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, so does the demand for skilled set designers. Set designers should possess strong problem-solving, design and project management skills as well as the ability to work within tight deadlines. A degree in film, set or theatre design is often required and extensive experience in the same or related roles is highly sought after.

Increasing media production and the rise of virtual reality continue to push the boundaries for set design. As a result, demand is high for talented set designers to help shape the visuals for projects ranging from films, virtual reality installations and theatrical performances. Large cities such as Los Angeles and New York are the major hub for set designers due to the prominent film and television industries in those cities. Qualified set designers are expected to understand the basics of traditional art, practical design and construction, as well as scenography. Set designers must be able to work with a wide range of budgets and time constraints to create an effective and efficient set design. Responsibilities include researching possible locations, communicating with production staff, creating models and project plans, as well as ensuring that all required permits are obtained.
