anyone make a short on HDV?

i've heard when shooting hd or hdv, it's essential to use a monitor. any other tips or advice? thanks.

The Z1's LCD can be calibrated (use a Hoodman, though). Keep in mind, an SD monitor is 601 colorspace and HDV is 709, so colors may not match. If you can, get a cheap LCD HDTV, even if it's 720p, and calibrate.

I've directed two shorts, one shot on the HD10 and the other on the FX1. I produced a horror short shot on the Z1. My feature will likely be shot on the Z1.

The XL H1 is nice, I'm testing it, but a bit pricey and tough to edit right now.

A monitor certainly helps, but the Z1 LCD can be configured to show the entire frame so you can keep crew and equipment out of the show... plus it has a 'zoom in' button which shows you the full HD resolution over the middle quarter of the frame for focussing.

The big issue is that the gamma curves for the LCD and TV are different, so what you get on the camera's LCD won't be what you see on an HDTV (at least, not if it's a CRT).

Good point. The zoom in he's referring to is called Expanded Focus. If you think you're in focus in HDV, you're likely not. Even if it's off by a hair, HDV (and HD) will look bad, unlike DV which is more forgiving with a very slightly out-of-focus shot.
