Another Student-Camera Question...

Alright I know there are a million of posts just like this on the site already so I'll get right to it...Im a college student interested in filmmaking, ready to purchase a camera of my own. Obviously I do not want the Rolls Royce of cameras to start with but I also do not want to buy one that will be outdated and of no use in a few years. Therefore judging the popularity of HD, should I spend the extra bucks and go the HD route? I've personally always been attracted to the Canon XL2, but the HD model of that, XL H1, is 8k. Sony, Canon, Panasonic??? HD no HD??? One other thing of note that in addition to student films and such I will be using the camera to film concerts, so is there one that has terrific sound pickup or will I have to go aftermarket? Any advice is appreciated.

If you're serious about concerts you probably do want an HD camera; the XLH1 would probably be ideal for that at the lower end of the price scale, but that's still a lot of dollars!

As for concert sound, you'd probably want to record direct from the mixing desk into a DAT or similar and then sync it up to the camera sound afterwards.
