    shooting glasses

I just saw Akeelah and the Bee, really beautiful work! With all the closeups and just general shots of glasses, how did you eliminate the glare/reflections?

    iris and shutter question

I actually prefer Blain Brown's book called Cinematography. I think its a lot more intersting than Malkewitz, although I haven't read the new edition which M. David Mullen helped write. They're both good books to read really.

    Camera advice

Casting calls are okay. But don't underestimate the power of just asking people in your theatre department who are good. They'll be flattered that you want them in your film. As for the camera dilema, you really won't find a "good" camera for $1000 unfortunately. Of course this is all very...

    multiple camera question

It is noticeable quality wise. But also you run into problems when you start mixing different brands as well. You will just without a doubt get two very different looks... That is if you put up an XL 2 against any consumer (or even prosumer in some cases) camera. One camera is generally more...

is the mic that comes on an xl1 good?

The word "good" is kind of subjective. But the rule of thumb is that if the mic came with the camera, its not a good mic... Maybe its good enough for what you're doing I don't know but my first thought would be to acquire a better mic.

    Help Choosing Camera...

The problem with the cameras above (other than the HV20), is that you won't be able to get it new, and will not be able to get a warranty with it. New cameras cost more, but I highly recommend if you buy used to make sure it has a U.S. warranty, because you never know what can go wrong with a...

    Standard monitor settings?

It does sound strange. You might check out http://www.billdill.com Bill Dill ASC explains how to set up a monitor properly... I'm not sure how useful it will be given your unusual set up, but maybe check it out.

    panosonic dvc30 worth getting?

I shot a film, Backspin: A Story of Ping Pong Greatness that you can check out on youtube. That was all shot with a DVC30. Of course, be mindful of the compression... Really, quality-wise, they're close enough that your skill level will determine which provides better images.

    panosonic dvc30 worth getting?

I own the DVC30, and have shot a lot with teh pd170. I really like the dvc30 much much more... It just handles better in my opinion. Also, you have so much more control over the image with the dvc30. For instance, you can only make small change to the image in terms of black pedestal and...

    The AD Gets The Shaft

That was an interesting read, and you make good points. Initially you are pointing out the absence of the AD from student films, but you go on to elaborate on their role in professional productions. Not that this can't be translated to student productions, but I've found that oftentimes having...

How to make my 3CCD look like better quality?

i will put my vote in lighting as well. Very important. This doesn't however mean that you need to own really expensive equipment. Owning just one or two 500 watt work lights and a white reflector board can do wonders for you. Be creative.

    The absolute cheapest HDV camera

i think the cheapest is canon's HV20... its $950. It seems to be a pretty good little camera.

    density

I'm going to be shooting a short 16mm film soon, and the one look I want to avoid that seems to be really prevelant in amateur 16mm is a general washed out low contrast negative. Is this a transfer issue? exposure issue? equipment? I'm thinking more along the lines of "in cold blood". Just as a...

    FILM SCHOOL

It would be dangerous to see film as a "fall back" solution if you don't make it big since there are so many people that ONLY make films and think about making them.
