    Purchasing an editing computer

Just a couple of comments... Adobe Premiere was around before Avid... Avid can no longer be called the standard. It's a ten year old interface designed to imitate a twenty year-old workflow. Avid may still have the edge in systems installed at a certain level, but even the television network...

HD ----- CMOS vs CCD & Progressive Vs Interlaced video

It is a tough one. CMOS, as MarkG states is where the most likely future lies...but in the short term, a CCD is more light sensitive as a CMOS sensor has a significant portion of each sensor's surface area occupied by a transisitor. Progressive is a good thing, but interlace isn't that big an...

Help with motion on premiere pro!

in the Effect Control Window, you will see a "timeline" for the selected clip. On this timeline, you can make "keyframes" to set different parameters for scale, position, etc. When the clip plays from one keyframe to the next keyframe, the still image will move from one set of settings to the...

Premire Pro Film Effects - For Film Noir-esque Movie

Well...rather than just say "do this"... What attributes do you notice in those films? Highlights? Blacks? Details? Key light? Back light? What looks dramatic? What ideas are communicated with various lighting and contrast ratios?

Premire Pro Film Effects - For Film Noir-esque Movie

Have you looked at Magic Bullet for Editors? There are some nice presets to save you some time in there... Is the footage shot already? If not, there are things you can do while shooting to help you get there as well.

student filmmaker horror story, need advice & give warni

Interesting... First off...as huge as this seems to you right now, after you get your first job, it will seem less important. Unfortunately good full-time professors seem to be getting tough to find these days. Of course, there were some real prizes 20 years ago when I was in school too. I...

Maya- is it the hardest 3D-ani program to learn?

Well...as with anything related to being creative...opinion is subjective. Maybe Maya is the hardest app to learn for the person you spoke with, on the other hand I know some 3d animators who swear by it. Keep in mind that a more powerful program has more things to learn...it's that simple...

Can Premiere be used for editing Films at 24fps

I think many people who have strong preferences on what software they prefer make their decisions based on what interface they're comfortable with...I certainly do. The point at which the conversation gets absurd is when those users categorize their preferences as everyone's preferences and...

Can Premiere be used for editing Films at 24fps

I find FCP and Premiere Pro to be pretty similar actually. Other than a few areas where one has an advantage over the other (advantage goes both ways depending on what you're focusing on...), I find them to edit in a similar manner.

How to divide a screen ?

In the Video Effects folder in the effects tab...in the keyer or keying folder (can't remember which it is called) there is an option called "Track Matte." You need to drag this onto the source clip (not the matte). In the options associated with the key in the Effect Control window you will...

    burning dvd

I would just verify results on a standard television... The conversion from DV to MPEG2 shouldn'y involve any cropping or scaling. The framesize should be exactly the same...720x576...as long as you have a PAL preset as you point out. If noise is somehow still an issue (beyond any noise that...

...Also, why haven't you simply exported to MPEG from the timeline with the media encoder? It's a far more direct route with less processing.

    burning dvd

OK, you're DV PAL... First, DV is 8 bit-no alpha...millions+ of colors is for an alpha channel and creates a larger filesize unnecessarily. Your DVD data rate is set pretty high for compatibility purposes...data rates above 6 Mbps can be incompatible on some DVD players. I might also try...

    burning dvd

3 minutes=7 Gigabytes? Is this a high def movie? I'm not familiar with the camera you mentioned... When you see these issues with the DVD, are you looking on the computer monitor, or are you watching it on a television? It sounds as if you've simply exceeded the acceptable color saturation...

How to divide a screen ?

The most straightforward way to do this would be with track mattes. You would create an image in photoshop, OR I quite frequently just use the title designer fr this as it works fine... The image should be black where you don't want video and white where you do. I would create a separate...

Breaking master files into smaller bits

When you capture, you can log out the tape and create a capture list of only the good clips...that would help a lot, not to mention make the media more manageable. If all the media is in there, then I would do a quick timeline chop on the reel and cut out everything that you KNOW you won't need...
