Long GOP isn't as efficient as I-frame...I agree wholeheartedly. But let's face it, Long GOP workflows are pretty workable these days. FCP moves through 50 Mbit XDcamHD effortlessly on a properly configured Mac.
Breathe man... My dismissive tone was aimed at Adobe, not the format. DVCProHD...
Vegas supports nearly everything...what are you system specs?
You may need to use MPEG Streamclip to convert to something easy to playback...DVCPHD is a pretty low-load codec.
Editing long GOP material isn't that big a deal anymore, but like anything else, it takes the horsepower it takes to...
Hi Ben...I see this thread is coming back to life. :-)
While i would say that Adobe needs to address some areas of "real world editing" situations...I'd be curious what situations you are referring to? Using an HDSDI I/O card perhaps? That's certainly one area where I think Adobe has simply...
In the video properties, I didn't see a compression type. It's either H.264 or MJPEG, but I'm not as familiar with the Nikons as I am the Canons...
Premiere Pro CS5 handles DSLR video files right on the timeline quite easily, but CS4 did not.
My recommendation would be to download a free...
On a slower computer I would say you want to export the clip portion out of PPro as a new clip using the work area brackets.
Dynamic link is a load...even for big computers.
Mercury playback engine is an advancement in playback response even without a Quadro card...but far far greater with one.
I suspect RAM might be less important than the memory bandwidth and number of GPU cores running on the card. The 5800 has 240 cores...the 4800 has 192.
As you've probably...
When i say serious system, I mean just that.
Quad core -minimum-.
8 core would be better
drives depend on what sort of media you're planning on handling. I can get 2 streams of uncompressed HD from my fibre channel hard drive array...but the interface card costs more than most people want to...
I use PPro for television commercials, video work for corporations and entertainment productions...and I've even done some independent film work on it.
I think you'd be fine with it on a PC...I'd recommend a serious 64 bit system with Windows 7 (probably not Vista) and also 8 GB RAM minimum...
I think that debating features against marketshare tends to be a conversation where people simply talk past each other.
If you want to be a freelance editor, you'd better know Avid and FCP...no question about that. Corporate production installations for high end have definitely settled in on...
From the other side of the situation...Premiere Pro has some merits.
Various video formats have specific traits and both FCP and PPro work in a way that optimizes a given sequence (or edit timeline) the specific settings to work with various specific formats "natively." (Final Cut requires...
PPro isn't any worse with MPEG than anything else...
It's biggest limitation right now is that it can't handle any MPEG bigger than 35 Mbits/second or anything at 4:2:2...so it only goes up to standard XDcamHD at 35 Mbits/s and 4:2:0.
I work with this format a lot, and it works well and looks...
From the post perspective...(I'm an interloper on David's forum...)
Are you part of a university or college program that has some sort of edit facility in place?
Some of the workflow advice could be targeted a bit more to your circumstances if you shared some of your probable logistic...
I recommend you look around and see if there are any 2000 dollar cameras out there with interchangeable lenses...there aren't...unless you go with a B Stock or a used DSLR possibly, though a series lenses will run you that much or more to acquire...then of course there's audio...
For 2000...
It's tough to answer your question...
Do you ever want to be a non-amateur filmmaker?
The problem with most of these consumer editing programs is that they're geared to people cutting the shots of their feet out of Johnny's birthday party video. They really don't have the toolset to cut...
It depends on what you plan on doing.
If you plan on a career as an editor, looking for work in episodic television and films, Avid and Final Cut are two programs you should get to know. Those parts of the industry are dominated by those two players right now.
If you want to edit your own...
