    shoointg/lightning effect

If it's only a few frames, you could export them as image files, draw the 'beam' on there with a paint program and then import them back and replace the original frames with the new ones.

non SYNC SOUND with multi tracks

Certainly you can sync it up, but it will be a lot of work unless the audio and video timecodes are the same or your editing software can sync it for you based on timecodes; otherwise you'll need to figure out what audio timecode matches which video timecode at the cuts.

10-bit uncompressed video to and from FCP?

Theoretically Firewire 800 will have no problem; it's up to 100 megabytes per second, while uncompressed SD at 10-bit color is around 25 megabytes per second. I don't know whether it will work in reality though. If it's been captured onto the drive as 10-bit uncompressed SD Quicktime files, I...

    Color Pass Question...

The best suggestion is to re-shoot it with nothing else red in the shot :). When we did a similar shot years ago that's exactly what we did, no red other than the blood we wanted to stay red in the finished shot. Otherwise you are going to have to manually mask out anything else that's red. I'm...

DVD Sudio Pro for HDV Projects Question

True: I find my system takes about two hours just to downconvert an hour of HDV footage to DVCPRO50 so I can feed that into the DVD software. Note that standard DVDs in standard DVD players will only play SDTV MPEG-2 files, so you'll have to downconvert to 720x480 (NTSC) or 720x576 (PAL) to...

how to set up a boom mic for three cameras?

Basically you'll want to record the sound either onto one of the cameras or onto a DAT, minidisk or similar recorder. Then you'd use a slate to sync the sound to the cameras which aren't receiving it live from the mike. Another option would be to run cables to all three cameras from the same...

    converting 16 mm to DVD?

There are cheap boxes where you point the projector in one side and point a camcorder in the other side and tape the output of the projector on the camcorder, but from what I've heard the quality isn't great. A proper telecine will be your best best; ideally you'd want to telecine to Digibeta or...

    Video (original clip) size question

If the frame-rates are different you may have to run it through some external software to convert frame-rates to match. Though I'm sure I managed to do NTSC->PAL conversion in Premiere 6.x before.

    Video (original clip) size question

Weird. I'm sure Premiere 6.x would automatically scale video to the project settings when you dropped it onto the timeline. Doesn't Premiere Pro do that?

    XL-2 vs DVX-100

To be honest, you can't really go wrong with either of them. Personally I prefer the look of the DVX footage, but you lose some features of the XL2 like the interchangeable lenses and the true 16:9 shooting (I may be wrong, but I believe the XL2 has that and the DVX100 doesn't?). So I'd look at...

gear needed for film to betasp process??

If you're still around, personally I'd telecine to DV, edit on DV, then output to DV and get it transferred to Beta SP for the festivals. There's a significant quality difference between Digibeta and DV, but not much between Beta SP and DV. Or you could get the negative cut and then a telecine...

Where should I get my Camera???/

The camera market is fully of dubious practices; so check sites like resellerratings.com for reviews of the various online stores before you buy. Personally I've found you're probably better off buying from a well-established and reputable dealer than trying to save a few bucks with a 'too good...

    Copy Protecting DVD

Personally, if I'd made a short and sent out the DVD and people were copying it, I'd be more than happy... the more people who see a short the more likely it is to end up in the hands of someone who might provide funding for future movies. I believe that's how 'South Park' came about, for...

BTW, I finally got DSL rather than time-limited dialup, so I'll be around more in the future :).

    screenwritng program

I have both, and I'm sticking to Final Draft :). But from what I've seen, Celtx is a very good deal for the price (i.e. free) and I'd use it over any other free script software I've seen.

    HDV VTR

I haven't tried it myself, but since Sony and Canon decided to use not terribly compatible HDV variants I'm not sure that the Sony deck will play Canon tapes. Probably the second greatest drawback of HDV is that it's not very compatible between manufacturers; I'm not sure how they managed to...

    S-VHS-C to dv-macbook pro

Does your DV camera have an analogue input? I used to have an analogue capture card in my PC, but now I just record analogue tapes to DV on my camera and then capture by Firewire.

What kind of degree, backgrounds, trainings would I need to

Basically you need to edit movies. A degree may help you learn to do that or may help you find contacts to get jobs after you graduate, but a good showreel will do more.

    Moving soon

Just thought I'd mention that I'm moving to Canada in two weeks, I've left my job so I have time to pack everything up and do all the nonsense that I have to get done before I leave, so I'm not going on the Internet much until mid-August. I think there's at least one other moderator on the...

    Camera clarification

There's a comparative review with lots of frame captures here: http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/xha1/ Obviously it's on a Panasonic-based site so may be a bit biased, but it should give you a good start. Personally I'd get the XHA1, but others like the HVX200.
