Converting sessions from Avid Pro to Final Cut Pro

Even with Automatic Duck you have to recapture your footage. There is not way to just convert and Avid project to FCP and use the existing captured media. It's always a recapture. You can export Quicktimes from Avid that FCP can read but then you lose timecode, reel #s.. much easier to do a...

    Using Illegal Editing Software?

you know software is cheap these days. Even at $1000 the final cut studio is a fraction of what this technology cost just a few years ago. you might not get caught ... but remember Karma. it will catch you in the end.

    Roll Out Plug Ins

You can also get stock footage of film flashes, burns and roll outs and place then in a video track above your footage. Then use composite modes to blend the film effects into the footage below. This will create a much more convincing roll out.

    Multiple computers, same project

The best way is to have complete duplicates of all the media and supporting files on 2 separate drives. Have the directories on each drive mirror the other and the just swap FCP project files. Keep the names properly so you don't get confused. And if one editor adds music, gfx, new media, you...

    DigiBeta Versus DV

If you convert to DV for editing are you then going to go back and online with your DigiBeta originals? If so then digibeta is a great idea as it's much higher quality than DV. If not then stick with DV all the way. The extra cost of Digibeta might not be worth it. You'll be downconverting to a...

Avid Xpress or final cut studio 2

You should go onto some of the apple and avid forums and search this topic. It is discussed all the time. Both apps have + and - 's. You get more bang for the buck with the FC Studio but Avid is an industry standard that has been around for a long time. Read, study and make you decision after that.

Mac Pro vs Macbook Pro for editing

Non-linear post is about horsepower, especially if you are doing graphics and dvd encoding and such. The Mac Pro is a great, fast machine. But if you have to have portability then the Macbook Pro may be the right choice. You have to lists the pros and cons of each and decide which is best for...

Crackling Noise at Every Audio Transition, grrr.

Add a tiny little audio dissolve to smooth those out. Can be as little as 3 or 4 frames will help.

newbie - have to render clips every time I drag into timelin

Rerendering should be required in Boris as well. when you move a title or change a font then the frames are changed, ie different font or the media underneath when moved. Rerendering is usually always required unless it's over black or something like that.

    importing avid files into FCP?

Auto Duck is a great product but it should be noted that you have to recapture the media as it just imports an offline list I believe. That is by far the best way to move from Avid to FCP, exporting an edl, batch list or something like Auto Duck from Avid and recaptuing in FCP. Avid uses its own...

newbie - have to render clips every time I drag into timelin

You are correct in that you need to match the media to the sequence settings. If you've pulled the media off dvd in some mpeg format then you really need to get it in a better "editable" format. Mpeg is for delivery. Google DVDxDV for a good app to do this. As for a quick way to get those...

Go the the Avid.com forums and search for that error message. Chances are someone has had the same thing.

    failure to find preroll point

"1. The timecode on the tape has many breaks... try turning off the TC button on that bar full of buttons.." I would not try the above method as that will not capture timecode and will not allow you to recapture should you need to in the future. It sounds like you don't have enough preroll for...

Bringing Avid files into Final Cut Pro

I wouldn't call FCP a "spin off" of Avid, more an answer to. It is possible to bring AVid files into FCP. But not advisable. Avid uses its own file format OMF and converts everything to that. You could export clips as a Quicktime that FCP can read but that would recompress everything and not a...

Anyone want to go through the steps of FC

turkeyjerky (nice name BTW) is right, what you are asking for way more than can or needs to be covered in a forum post. IF you are an Avid editor you can learn it pretty easily, just dig in. If you don't have the manuals then the help menu has them all if installed. One of the best net...
