Devils Advocate position here. Lets say someone wanted to make a movie about a disgruntled middle aged something who joins a group intent on offing the U.S. President. As the movie description appeared in Film publications, would not the Secret Service and Homeland security place the maker of...
Just to update this topic.
Digital Still cameras are providing excellent ways to learn by doing, however, there still are gotcha's depending on which digital still camera one gets.
At the end of the day, the lower cost digital still cameras still don't provide all of the tools needed to do...
good for you. I was going to suggest pull it one stop, but I was also wondering if you were really three stops over.
AS for reversal film.
http://www.spectrafilmandvideo.com is kicking but with their Velvia ASA 50 and Ektachrome 100D (both in super-8, don't know if it is available in 16mm)...
When you get to the point that you have an emotional investment in the project you are shooting, then having your own camera, that you trust, is essential. It doesn't have to be an expensive camera, just something that you have learned inside and out and know it's exact capabilities and...
super-8 cameras can be found very inexpensively. http://www.spectrafilmandvideo.com in North Hollywood, California tries to keep a few working super-8 cameras in stock at a very reasonable price for those that want to experience shooting film once or twice. They also offer film packages where...
I agree with your analysis as being an accurate representation of everything digital. I also believe that it is no longer an issue of either or, either (hehehe). No matter how many videos you have made using the above workflow, I doubt that it hurts to know how to make a film by shooting...
One of the more interesting projects I edited a few years ago was documentary done by two teenagers as they traveled Costa Rica with peers from their school.
They were given two 1-chip S-VHS camcorders that had been used for several years as wedding video cameras. When the footage was first...
From the DP's point of view this is very true, but form the telecine operator they might be able to pull a obscene amount of dyanmic range out of a film image and in essence actually have more choices of how the scene looks when it is blown out.
Re: multiple camera question
This is a great question. One the one hand, making the most out of whatever you have at hand is rule number one for guerilla filmmaking, on the other hand matching your cameras and never straying from that philosophy might land you better paying jobs down the...
Digital still technology will eventually probably make huge inroads into this type of filmmaking. However, for the quickest, most inexpensive way to learn, a super-8 camera that does time exposure is the best way to learn because you can still view the image through the viewfinder at all times...
Only when dealing with compressed NLE codecs. To be fair to final cut pro, the other NLE systems have trouble as well. Lets not blame all the digital NLE systems shortcomings on interlace. Everytime there is a problem, "Oh, it's because the video is interlaced". How about some honesty here...
I have shot over around 35 super-8 film cartridges for a super-8 film short that I am the DP on. What has struck me most is how the Rank Cintel Film Transfer process really enables Super-8 film to pretty much like like how you want it, as long as you don't want it look like video or 35mm.
I...

Re: one last question..
I would be wary of going anywhere that must charge you an hourly rate when you are not sure it will work. You'd be better off renting a deck for a day (a full sive DV-CAM or mini-dv recorder deck) and making sure you can successfully achieve a...
